How do visual artists see America’s 250th celebration when sitting in front of a blank posterboard? That’s what the Heritage Museum wanted to know as it launched a poster contest for all children in Okaloosa County. How do future writers and historians view this special anniversary? With the help of Okaloosa County Schools, rubrics were designed and a timed-writing contest took place in 7th grade history classes.

The poster competition could not have been done without the skill and dedication of volunteer Carole Schneider who coordinated the contest. The team of judges, Connie Wolfe, Deborah Edgar and Elvira Chiccarelli, had a difficult task as all entries were creative and inspirational. All the posters are displayed in the gift shop area of the Heritage Museum so please come and view all these exciting creative works of art!
The essay competition, the first “Plank-Schlitt United States History Writing Contest” to honor retired history teachers at Niceville High School, was judged by Dr. Marie Hallion and Dooney Tickner.
