We’ve all seen it—talented team members who, for a moment, lose their footing. One day they’re thriving in their strengths, and the next, they’re stuck in patterns that hold them back. The good news? With a little awareness and encouragement, it’s possible to help them rise from “basement” behaviors back to their “balcony,” where their strengths truly shine.

Unlocking Your Co-worker’s Futuristic Superpower

Do you have a co-worker who’s usually full of bold, forward-thinking ideas but every so often, they get stuck in the past? I’ve got one on my team who’s typically amazing at imagining what the future could look like. But recently, when we were brainstorming new strategies, they seemed to focus on what had failed in the past instead of dreaming big. It was like watching someone with a vision for the future stuck in the basement of regret!

This is a classic case of “basement” behaviors for someone with the Futuristic strength. When they feel weighed down by past setbacks or uncertainty, they can get bogged down in focusing on what didn’t work, rather than looking ahead. But at their core, they have an amazing ability to envision what’s possible and inspire others to reach for exciting, innovative goals.

How can we help them get back to their “balcony” and thrive? Here are 3 ideas:

  1. Shift the Focus to Possibilities – Encourage them to share what could be, not what’s been. Helping them focus on future opportunities reignites their natural optimism.
  2. Create Space for Visionary Thinking – Invite them into discussions about long-term goals or big-picture projects where their future-focused ideas can truly shine.
  3. Celebrate Bold Ideas – Acknowledge when they share innovative solutions and forward-thinking strategies. Positive reinforcement will fuel their creative vision.

Unlocking Your Co-worker’s Focus Superpower

Do you have a co-worker who’s usually laser-focused and driven, but every so often, they seem to lose track of what’s important? I’ve got one on my team who’s typically amazing at blocking out distractions and staying on task. But recently, during a meeting, they became overwhelmed by too many tasks and started jumping from one thing to the next without finishing anything. It was like watching someone with super focus stuck in the basement of overwhelm!

This is a classic case of “basement” behaviors for someone with the Focus strength. When they feel scattered or have too many things on their plate, they can get bogged down and lose their ability to zero in on what truly matters. But at their core, they have an incredible ability to concentrate on the big picture and drive toward meaningful goals.

How can we help them get back to their “balcony” and thrive? Here are 3 ideas:

  1. Help Prioritize Tasks – Encourage them to focus on the most important tasks first. Breaking things down into smaller, manageable chunks can help bring back clarity.
  2. Encourage Short Breaks – Sometimes, a quick reset can help refocus. Encourage them to step away for a moment to regain perspective and energy.
  3. Celebrate Their Achievements – Acknowledge their ability to get things done when they’re on track. Recognizing their focus will inspire them to keep pushing forward.

When we recognize these patterns and respond with intention, we not only help others succeed—we strengthen our entire team. The goal isn’t perfection, but progress: helping each person rise back to their strengths and operate at their very best.
