The current travel trend of 2020 is to stay closer to home. Americans are looking for vacations they can enjoy without leaving the good ole USA.
While celebrating this year might look quite different than it did last year as we see civil unrest and a global pandemic, we must never forget our past! To study and explore the rich history of our country, both the good as well as the bad is critical to our survival. It is our heritage and how we became who we are now.
There are many historical sites, monuments, museums, parks and destinations to experience and so many ways to do it. But this month, I am going to talk about the ever common and currently popular “road trip.”
RV rentals are up 83% as families hit the road. If you’re not up for driving a motor home or pulling an RV and prefer the family car or SUV, that’s ok, it’s all the same highway to get there. No matter your choice of transportation, just remember to savor the journey. The drive alone is worth the trip. Your health and safety are paramount to us and all travel destinations and their providers. Plan ahead, stay safe and follow their safety protocol.
Here is a quick list of my personal favorites to get you started on your road trip back in time. Plan your historical getaway and discover the sacrifice and heritage that made America.
New Orleans LA: Learn about the signing of the Louisiana Purchase or the Sugar and Rice Exchange, Louisiana’s two major commodities for nearly 80 years. Discover your family heroes in the war of 1812. Learn about the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Visit Jackson Square. Tour River Road, home to a row of original Antebellum Mansions along the Mississippi River.
Visit the WWII Museum with interactive exhibits, plus an extensive selection of memorabilia and machines used in the D-Day Day landings, the National WWII Museum offers a fascinating insight into the USA’s role in the Second World War.
Vicksburg MS: Drive through the Vicksburg National Military Park that preserves the site of the American Civil War Battle of Vicksburg, waged from March 29 to July 4, 1863.
Tour some of the Vicksburg homes that were turned into hospitals where you can view still existing cannon ball holes through the ceiling or the yard trenches dug to shelter families from incoming artillery during one of the Civil War’s most deadly battles.
Atlanta GA: The Atlanta History Museum in Buckhead is one the best history and war museums my husband and I have ever visited; however, it is only one of the many museums in Atlanta.
Trivia question? Did you know Atlanta and other parts of Georgia has become a much sought-after movie and TV filming location? Tour the sites of some of your favorite movies and television shows.
Savannah GA: You will get a good dose of southern hospitality in Savannah as you stroll down the old cobblestone streets and sample the tasty cuisine or step into one of the trendy boutiques. Savannah is also famous for her city squares and Victorian District.
Charleston SC: Just 100 miles from Savannah you will find her sister city Charleston, often referred to as the Holy City because of her historic churches. Take a cruise on the Charleston Harbor and visit Patriots Point, Fort Sumter, and the USS Yorktown. Charleston is also home to one of the oldest museums in the United States.
St Augustine FL: Speaking of old, I love walking through the streets of the Spanish Colonial neighborhoods in America’s oldest city since 1565. Tour a 400 year old home and learn how the changing colonial tides of St Augustine impacted the residents of the Nation’s oldest city through an account of the people who actually lived in the house. The mid-1700 Fort Matanzas still guards the city today.
I am proud of my southern heritage. I have grandfathers who fought on both sides of the Civil War. My ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War and every war along the road to our freedom.
