It’s been a Big Year for ROKU and AMAZON FIRE TV

The first thing in this article you may be asking, is: What IS ROKU and Amazon Fire TV? Each are a method of obtaining television via a device connected to the internet, in place of satellite or cable. Each are taking the “streaming” TV market by storm, based on the choice of television/movies at a much lower cost, perhaps even free,  than traditional cable or satellite. The concept is simple, connect the box, install an “app” or channel, enter your WIFI credentials, and begin viewing!

So, what can you get for “free” ? Well quite a lot actually. Channels such as PBS, PLUTO (100+ channels of live tv) Tubi.tv and Crackle (free movies) can be bookended between paid services such as Netflix, Istreamitall.com (our favorite for TV and Movies) Hulu, and newly formed Philo TV.  Now that ROKU formed an IPO and went public, larger networks such as NBC Sports, CBS, and ABC are also now available. Apparently the public also likes ROKU, as their stock has tripled since their launch late last year.

ROKU has now also launched a line of televisions that include the ROKU channels, via the brand TCL, with some super pricing and smart TV capabilities. As of now, by user count, ROKU would be the third largest cable provider in the country behind Comcast and AT&T. The number of accounts for ROKU rose 44% while Comcast and AT&T are essentially flat.

This massive shift in how consumers get their TV – when and where they want, not on a timed event “8pm on a Wednesday” is called cord cutting. And there is more to come.

  1. By 2025, half of the viewers under 32 will not subscribe to a pay-TV service.
  2. 6 out of 10 people prefer online video platforms to live TV.
  3. The total number of hours of video watched on YouTube each month is now 3.25 billion.
  4. 10,113 Youtube videos generated over 1 billion views.
  5. 80% of YouTube’s views are from outside of the U.S.
  6. The average number of mobile YouTube video views per day is 1,000,000,000
  7. The average mobile viewing session lasts more than 40 minutes. This is up more than 50% year-over-year.

But yet, only 9% of U.S small businesses use Youtube to promote their business. With the kind of numbers being reported above, there is certainly room to expand.
