What About My Skin?

Last month, I spoke briefly about spring cleaning, but I didn’t include the bathroom. The bathroom can be a calming place, but it can also contain an abundance of chemicals. From body wash to shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotions, makeup, shaving cream, aftershave, perfume and the list goes on. How many different scents can you discover?
I bring this up because all of this goes on our skin and the skin, being the largest organ of the body, plays a very important role in our health.

Roughly 15% of our body weight is our skin. The three main functions are protection, regulation and sensation/immune response respectively. The primary function is to act as a barrier. It provides protection from various environmental elements—temperature, bacteria, chemicals, the sun and more.

So, paying attention to your skin and what you put on it is important. What would you prefer, a chemical that does something to your skin or a natural product that supports your normal skin functions? And men, we ladies like looking at healthy soft skin as much as you do. So, please take care of it.

Some tips for keeping your skin healthy:

Stay hydrated—Water provides your skin with moisture and helps to flush out toxins. It provides a smooth appearance and helps your skin look plump.

Healthy Foods—Foods such as oranges, apples, strawberries, spinach and broccoli nourish the skin from the inside. Foods loaded with sugar, bad fats, etc. can do the opposite (blemishes, dullness, etc.)

Excess Sun Exposure—We are all aware of these dangers. Seek out healthy skin care without chemicals and ones that include a natural sunblock (especially for the face).
Sleep—Our bodies are busy while we sleep repairing and regenerating—just a few of the body’s nighttime functions. Choose loose-fitting pajamas made from natural materials.

Care for your skin—Consistency is key. Moisturize your skin with a high-quality moisturizer. The face takes a lot of abuse every day and it’s the first thing we look at. Exfoliating, moisturizing and nurturing your face with the nutrients it needs not only boosts your beauty (or handsomeness) but your skin’s defenses as well (H2O, Curcumin, Alpha-lipoic Acid, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, Glucosamine, Vitamin C).

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, why not surprise her with a special spa evening? Join her with your favorite beverage, music/movie and appetizer while enjoying a scrub mask and moisture rich, restoring serum. Fun facts: Every single day we shed more than 30,000 skin cells. Each square inch of our skin is made up of about 19 million cells. All of the skin we are looking at right now is dead. (Dig down about 20 layers and you’ll find a living skin cell.) Dead cells are flat and hard and create layer upon layer of protection (like roof shingles). These dead cells literally turn into dust. In fact, a lot of the dust in our homes is actually DEAD SKIN! We produce roughly eight pounds of skin-cell dust per year. Thank your dust the next time you wipe it away and remember that the skin you look at in the mirror is not the skin you looked at yesterday. It is constantly renewing itself.

Take time to enjoy your skin.
