Since the 1930s, the American Legion Oratorical Contest has worked to encourage knowledge and appreciation by high schoolers of the U.S. Constitution. This time, the Millennial Mayor and I sat down to discuss the contest and contestants.
TY: In January, I had the pleasure of being one of the judges of the local American Legion Post 296 oratorical contest, and I know you were a judge the previous year. What a treat to listen to those young people rattle off 10-minute presentations by memory about the obligation of a citizen to our government. They were impressive!
BW: When Jim Wood asked me to judge, I didn’t fully grasp what an incredible experience it would be. What I remember most from that day was watching high school students use their gift of communication to bring the patriotic heritage of our country to life—all presented onstage for a chance to win and represent Destin at the next level.
TY: How fantastic that we both got to hear our very own local student William Kiker present his wise words. He won here in Destin, went off to State in Orlando and won, and now will head to Nationals in May in Michigan. How important is it to you that young people become involved in the understandings and workings of government, rights, and freedoms?
BW: He was incredibly impressive when I met him, and I believe he’s destined for great things if he continues to follow his passions in life. We need more young people sharing their thoughts and input. We’re stronger together.
TY: The contest is of course for high schoolers, but it wouldn’t be as successful without Jim Wood, Corlene Ziegler, and other local residents. I love to see the generational passion shared.
BW: Absolutely. These local leaders do so much for our community, and they’ve done an outstanding job improving the American Legion Post on Main Street. A well-deserved shoutout: I highly recommend everyone—military or not—visit and support their post. They offer everything from Sunday breakfasts to weekly events, plus a full bar with darts and a pool table.
