This time, Mayor Wagner and I sat down and talked about the city’s Master Plan. Merrill Romanik and Gianno Feoli from SRS presented updated plans at the last Council meeting.

TY: So far with the Town Center Master Plan, we’ve had community meetings, a digital survey, meetings with the Chamber of Commerce and also the Publix Site Developer. Lots of talk, and we’re ready for action.

BW: Action is the key to turning dreams into reality! The input we’ve gathered from the community and stakeholders has laid the groundwork for a plan that reflects Destin’s unique charm and future aspirations. Now it’s about bringing together key partners and pursuing grant opportunities to ensure this vision becomes a reality. Collaboration and smart funding will be the driving forces behind making the Town Center a vibrant and functional heart of our city.

TY: The idea of incorporating Destin’s history is a critical piece to this and was seen in the Fishing Village concept. Among other clever incorporations, the latest renderings show a weigh-in picture spot, fish camp replica, bait and tackle gift shop, and an outdoor lawn and play area.

BW: Destin’s identity is rooted in its fishing heritage, and these ideas honor that beautifully. These elements not only celebrate our story but also create inviting spaces for both locals and visitors to enjoy. I’m excited about continuing discussions on how we can further weave our history into this plan, creating a meaningful and dynamic space that serves our current and future citizens. This is about more than design—it’s about community and legacy.

TY: Another significant component was the recommendation of a 30,000 square foot City Hall and a 40,000 square foot Community Center, both near the roundabout. What’s your thoughts about this piece of the plan?

BW: Placing City Hall and the Community Center at Morgan Sports Center is a chance to create something truly special. I see these spaces as more than just buildings—they’re opportunities to bring our community together. Imagine partnerships with Destin High School or the Boys and Girls Club, creating hubs for education, recreation, and connection.

My vision is a place that enriches lives and meets real needs, making Destin an even better place for our residents.
