Backroads Sports Network. Just plain sports and nothing else. Up until now, the story is short and sweet. The network launched a mere two months ago in August. “We hit the ground running and we haven’t stopped since,” says Shara Andrews, spokesperson for the network. “In fact, we are growing faster and bigger and doing more than we ever dreamed of.” The network started only eight weeks ago right here in Destin and the plan is to stream content to more than 500 markets throughout the southeast. “Backroads Sports Network is changing the big city and backroads markets, showing people what real sports talk looks like and sounds like,” says Andrews.
So how did the network start? “Like you,” says Andrews, “we had grown tired of the politics, commercialism and agenda-driven commentary of the likes of ESPN, CBS and Fox. Backroads was born to bring real sports, focused content and honest commentary to sports lovers across the southeast – from the big cities all the way down to the smallest, backroads communities.” The network handpicked a dream line-up of personalities to bring its mission to life such as Tommy Tuberville, one of the winningest coaches in college football history. Insightful, dynamic and always entertaining, David Seering, Destin’s own, co-hosts the show, adding local flavor with some pizzazz. David is an accomplished musician who has played for three presidents, and Andrews says the network is proud to have him on the team. Mike Johnson, former Alabama captain and Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman, offers powerful insights from the players’ point of view. Rachel Baribeau contributes heartfelt and intimate commentary. Scott Moore, The Flash and Rob Brown round out the dynamic team of passionate commentators.
Speaking of passion, the network has very recently given birth to the Heartbeat of Backroads, a new non-profit organization established for Hurricane Michael Relief. “The ‘Heartbeat’ was born literally while Hurricane Michael was ravaging our eastern neighbors on the Emerald Coast and is staffed by hundreds of volunteers who give their bodies, brains and sweat to help the victims,” says Andrews. Ever since the aftermath of Michael, truckloads upon truckloads of supplies have been gathered and delivered three times a week to the most ravaged neighborhoods. “We don’t drop off at Emergency Operations Centers,” she says, “we bring the lifeline of supplies directly to the people who are not even able to get to the EOCs. We are serving hot meals and cold drinks. We are clearing people’s yards so they can get out of their driveways. After the initial clean up from Michael is complete, we will continue our journey of help, and transition to repairing and rebuilding houses.” That’s why, she says, the Heartbeat is in great need of volunteers.
