People of South Walton: Kate Christenson

South Walton is truly a unique corner of the world. We enjoy some of the most spectacular beaches on the planet that call to travelers from our own country and abroad.  We have everything from rare coastal dune lakes to world class art and culinary experiences.  It seems to be a mecca for creatives, innovators, old souls and beach bums alike. But what makes our slice of heaven all the more wonderful is that in all our diversity and growth, we strive to retain a sense of community. The people of South Walton are what have, and will continue to make it such a special place for generations to come.  Today we share a piece of Kate Christenson’s story; a mother of two, South Walton Firefighter and EMS of nearly 14 years.

There are 2 women firefighters out of a staff of 90 combat personnel in South Walton.

What made you decide on this career path?

I grew up in Miami and in 1992 I went through Hurricane Andrew.  After Andrew hit there was a ton of public service that came together to help out during the time of need. The comradery I saw really piqued my interest in this line of work. I was inspired by the military, Fire Department, and Police department working together to help people.

Once you had that experience what was your next step?

I waited a few years and got my EMT which was required to enter into the Florida State  Fire College.

How did you end up here?

While I was at Fire College one of the guys was from South Walton and he brought applications to everyone in our class to recruit people for a job. I came here and saw the beautiful beaches and fell in love with the area.  I had an interview and was offered a job shortly after. Then I met my husband here in paramedic school in the panhandle.

Wow, you and your husband are both EMTs and firefighters, how does that work? Are you ships in the night?

No we tried working alternating shifts but it didn’t work that well. We ended up getting a sitter only for the days we have to go into work. Our schedule is 24hrs on and 48 hrs off and we work the same shift.

Do you get to sleep during that 24 hour shift?

Sometimes, but not so much during tourist season!

What’s your day like?

When you go to work you rotate your jobs,  one day you work on the ambulance, one day you work on the fire truck, one day you’re the driver, and one day you’re in the backseat. I enjoy working any of those roles.

All the calls humble you in a sense and make you realize not to complain about the small things in life. When responding to a 911 call I arrive on scene  with the mindset that the people that called us is not having a good day. I strive to be the best part of people’s worst days.

How do you do it?

You just get used to it. When  I’m off from work I love to hang out with my kids.  I also enjoy exercising and doing yoga.

How else do you impact the community?

I teach First Responder and CPR classes throughout the year. During the month of October it is Fire safety month.  Fire Marshal Sammy Sanchez and all the crews help teach fire safety to various schools throughout the month of October.

What’s your secret?  What keeps you sane?

I think my husband and my family keep me sane. It’s a huge team effort to work together and help each other out in our family.
