Every year, we have a wave of new interior design trends that hit the market. Some make a huge impact and hang around for years and others fade into the sunset as quickly as they arrived. I must confess, I’m not a huge follower of trends or rules (shhh, don’t tell my grandkids), but you can never go wrong when you add a little modern flair while welcoming Mother Nature indoors.

That being said, I’ve taken the liberty to explore the items I think would be most applicable to our beautiful Emerald Coast area:

Vintage/Reclaimed Materials – Yes, we’re still experiencing supply chain shortages that will likely continue for a while. One-of-a-kind finds are being found at antique marts, second-hand stores and estate sales. Think about reupholstering chairs, painting or re-staining furniture in an earthy color, not to mention you are “upcycling” which is environmentally friendly.

Green – If your first thought was plants, wall color or furniture, the answer is yes to all of them. Plants are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also help purify the air, too. Several of the top paint manufacturers have named various shades of “green” as the “Color of the Year” for 2022. Selecting the right shade of green can add playful accents in the kitchen to fully painted walls in the living room. You’ll also see more use of wallpaper and fabrics in green tones. Yes, wallpaper is back and the larger the pattern the better! As far as furniture goes, think about repainting a traditional piece or recover an existing chair for a pop or subtle nod in any room.

Organic and Shape – Expect to see more furniture with rounded or curved edges, upholstered in organic prints. If a printed sofa is too risky for you, you can always use those prints on throw pillows or chairs. Printed fabric will create interest in any room. Bamboo and Cork flooring options are being highly sought after, too. These flooring materials are sustainable and provide a soft and natural look. Cork is ideal for any room in your home, since it’s waterproof and resistant to mold and mildew.

Lamps – Back in the 70’s, lamps made a statement. That trend is front and center again in 2022. You can expect to see more table lamps with sculptural shapes, lots of texture and even colored glass making them pieces of artwork in your room. Vintage and antique lamps like these are considered gems. Grab one (if you can find it) and add a fresh new shade for a modern twist. You’ll also start noticing printed lamp shades making a comeback, too. If you love your existing lamps, you can update them by adding a printed shade. Lamps add light to your favorite reading area, make a style statement and are most often the finishing touch in your space.

Windows – This is not as simple as some of the other trends, but larger windows are a hot ticket item and not just in the kitchen and living room. Larger windows are being installed in some unexpected rooms, like a bathroom. Skylights are also trending and they’re better than ever. They can be installed with screens, remote controls and motorized shades. You can never go wrong with natural light, unless you’re installing a home theatre.

Trends come and go. There are no rules. However, whatever trend you choose to follow, make sure you will be comfortable in your home.
