Holiday Glow: Smart Skincare for Every Age

The holidays are right around the corner, and you know what that means—lots of gatherings, family photos and a little extra sparkle in our routines! This time of year, I always remind my clients (and myself!) that glowing skin is the best accessory you can wear.

But before you start trying every new product you see on social media, let’s talk about what really works—and what might not.

Let’s Talk TikTok Trends. TikTok and Instagram are full of “12-step skincare routines” and “multi-mask challenges.” While they may look fun, they can actually do more harm than good, especially for teens and tweens. Overloading young skin with too many active ingredients or harsh acids can cause irritation, dryness and even breakouts.

You don’t need 12 steps to have beautiful skin. You just need the right ones—simple, age-smart skincare.

Tweens & Teens:

For younger skin, less is best. Stick with a gentle cleanser, a good moisturizer, and a daily SPF 30 sunscreen. I always say, good skincare is about balance, not trends. If you want to introduce your teen to quality products, look for clean, simple lines like Jane Iredale, which are made without parabens, synthetic fragrances, or harsh chemicals—perfect for any age or sensitivity.

Adults (30s–50s):

As our skin matures, consistency matters more than complexity. Introduce one or two effective actives, like a mild glycolic or retinol, but don’t overwhelm your skin. I love adding an antioxidant serum—Vitamin C and niacinamide are two of my favorites—especially this time of year when the air is dry. And yes, sunscreen is still a must, even on cloudy days!

Mature Skin (50+):

Hydration, hydration, hydration! Look for ingredients like ceramides, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. A rich moisturizer and eye cream can work wonders for texture and firmness. Retinol can still be your friend—just introduce it gradually. And when it comes to advanced treatments, talk to a trusted professional before diving in.

At Beverly Hills Day Spa, I use and recommend Jane Iredale exclusively—for myself and my clients. Their mineral-based skincare and makeup are infused with pure, skin-loving ingredients like aloe and botanicals that nourish rather than irritate. Tried and true, Jane Iredale products have earned the loyalty of countless happy users around the world—because they simply work.

If you’re looking for the perfect holiday gift, our specially formulated Jane Iredale skincare and makeup line is a thoughtful choice for anyone on your list—from teens learning good habits to moms (and grandmoms!) who deserve a little pampering.

Holiday Glow: Smart Skincare for Every Age

As the season of fall gatherings and holiday photo ops warms up, it’s the perfect time to refresh your skincare routine. But before you dive into the latest viral skincare trend — especially those flooding social media platforms like TikTok — here’s a look at what’s really beneficial, and what might do more harm than good.

Viral Skincare Warning

TikTok is awash with ultra-long, multi-step skincare routines, sometimes dubbed “12-step” or “multi-mask” hacks. But dermatologists caution young users: over-layering active ingredients, skipping foundational sunscreen, and mimicking influencer routines can lead to broken skin barriers or irritation — especially in younger skin.

Age-Smart Skincare Tips

Tweens & Teens (roughly ages 10-17):

  • Keep it simple: gentle cleanser, broad-spectrum SPF 30+, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer.
  • Avoid heavy anti-aging actives like strong retinols or multiple harsh acids.
  • Teach that sun protection and good habits (sleep, diet, hydration) trump “perfect” skin.
  • If using skincare products selected from a spa or boutique, consider clean-ingredient lines like Jane Iredale, which are formulated without parabens, synthetic fragrance or harmful additives — and are suitable for all ages and sensitivities.

Adults in their 30s–50s:

  • Introduce one or two well-chosen actives: for example, a gentle glycolic acid or low-dose retinol — but consistency matters more than complexity.
  • Keep sunscreen as your skin’s cornerstone; active ingredients won’t work well if UV damage continues daily.
  • Add antioxidant serums (like vitamin C or niacinamide) and a richer night cream for seasonal dryness.

Middle Age and Beyond (50+):

  • Prioritize barrier repair and hydration: look for ceramides, peptides and hyaluronic acid.
  • Use a tailored eye cream and richer moisturizer for changes in texture and firmness.
  • Retinol is still valuable but introduce it slowly, and always pair with nighttime moisturizer and morning SPF.
  • If exploring professional treatments (microneedling, gentle laser, etc.), do so with guidance — not because of a viral trend.

Making the Most of Holiday Prep

As November fills with parties, photo ops and festive lights, make sure your skincare routine supports the glow you want — not a rash or reaction you’ll regret. Choose products with clear labels (fragrance-free if you’re sensitive), proceed with intention rather than impulse, and treat skincare as self-care rather than a social-media checklist.

The best holiday accessory? Healthy, confident skin — and that often starts with smart habits, not viral routines.

 Holiday Skincare Checklist

  • Choose a gentle cleanser and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.
  • Limit active ingredients — especially for younger skin.
  • Introduce one new active ingredient only at a time.
  • Hydrate: use moisturizers with ceramides, peptides or hyaluronic acid.
  • Protect: always end with sunscreen in the morning.
  • Keep habits healthy: adequate sleep, balanced diet, hydration and sun protection.
  • Avoid layering too many products or chasing every viral trend.
  • Pamper your skin the clean way: consider Jane Iredale, a mineral-based brand recognized for pure, aloe-infused, skin-nourishing formulations.
  • As you apply makeup for holiday events, choose formulas that enhance your skin’s health and natural glow.
  • Most importantly: confidence and gratitude shine brighter than any filter.
