Tournament to Run the Duration of Red Snapper Season and Include Gag Grouper
and Greater Amberjack Seasons as Well
The Boathouse Oyster Bar on the Destin Harbor is the host of a brand new Fishing Tournament in Destin. The Boathouse Summer Slam is a winner takes all tournament that began June 1 and will run through August 4.
The Summer Slam has four categories: Red Snapper, Gag Grouper, Greater Amberjack, and Pounders. The divisions within each category are Federal, State, and Private. Each division is winner takes all, and 12 winners will walk away with a cash prize.
It is no coincidence that the Tournament begins on the first day of Red Snapper Season. “We really wanted to be able to promote Red Snapper season since they are not able to do that in the (Destin Fishing) Rodeo anymore.” said Missy Schofield, owner of the Boathouse. “It’s an opportunity for the boat captains and the mates to engage in a little friendly competition during the busy season.”
The tournament has been well received bye the local fishing community. Destin Charter Boat Association President Capt. Jim Green of the American Spirit Party Boat enthusiastically supports the new event. “The Boathouse Summer Slam is a great way to generate more angler participation and encourage people to utilize our natural resources here in Destin. It also has the potential to become another great Destin tradition.”
The cost to participate in the tournament is $300, and fish will be weighed daily at the Boathouse from noon until 7 p.m.
The Boathouse Oyster Bar is one of Destin’s best kept secrets. Located on the Destin Harbor, the Boathouse offers oysters, gumbo, and a variety of seafood with a water view. A Destin favorite that has been voted Best Oysters and Gumbo for the past 30 years.
