Long-time Walton County activist Bill Fletcher has announced he’s running in this year’s election for District 4 County Commissioner. “I believe we need to foster better communication between citizens and our government,” Fletcher says. “We can restore confidence by strictly adhering to the Sunshine Law and Public Records Law with completely open and transparent governance. This means working together as one county and not as North or South Walton, but as one community working towards common goals. Together we have the opportunity to achieve great things for Walton County citizens.”

Another concern for Fletcher is in inconsistencies he sees in the county dealing with development requests. “We must look at the impact of new construction on traffic, parking and drainage issues before approval. Many feel that our Scenic Corridor rules are ambiguous and inconsistently enforced. There are similar concerns about regulations, Code Enforcement and Zoning. There needs to be a thorough review and clarification. If we run the county as a business and create an impartial, transparent process, we’ll be better off in the long run. We should focus on diversifying our economy, attracting more businesses and industry to our county and lessening the impact of a downturn in tourism. We have a lot of excellent business owners in the area. Let’s use their experience and expertise to define some of the problems they face and get their input for solutions.”

Fletcher is the retired CEO of JTM Industries, having spent nine years as the executive leader growing the company’s annual revenues from 18 to 62 million, making it one of the largest companies in its industry. He relocated with his wife to South Walton in 1998.

A partial list of Fletcher’s community involvement includes service as board president of the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center; a past volunteer of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office; board member of the Kiwanis Club of Freeport-South Walton; appointed member of the Walton County Zoning Board of Adjustment; member & former board member, Walton County Taxpayers Association; board member, Walton Area Chamber of Commerce; past board member from 2013-2017 of the Institute for Senior Professionals executive advisory group; and the Northwest Florida State Walton County State Committeeman for the Republican Party of Florida. Fletcher also spent several years working with the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance and the South Walton Turtle Watch.
