As Thanksgiving is upon us, we find ourselves being asked just what it is we are thankful for and we hear all the usual replies. However, I would like to take this time to say I am thankful to live in Destin. I moved here six years ago from Birmingham not knowing anyone who lived in this beautiful city, but certainly grew up coming here on vacations. I didn’t know how well I would be received as an outsider, but locals could not have been more friendly and welcoming. Settling in was a wonderful, instead of a harrowing experience up to and including getting my driver’s license. My son helped me move down here and even he noticed the kindness was overwhelming! Locals would just start sharing with me tips about living here before I could even ask. They seemed more excited than me that I was here! I decided to ask members in our Destinites Facebook group to tell me what they loved the most about living here — the kindness and close community connections were the number factors. One member said, “When you put nice people in a beautiful setting…you get Destin!”
Here are a few other comments made by our local group members:
1. “My favorite thing is when I drive or ride over the Destin bridge and see the light and clouds reflecting on the water. It always inspires and makes me thankful I live here.”
2. “Love seeing people out on bikes and scooters all over town!”
3. “I love the small-town feel, being able to walk the docks in the evening and seeing my Dad come in from a fishing trip or watching the boats early mornings fishing for bait.”
4. “Love the quality of life and being able to raise my kids here is a dream come true and I’ll forever be grateful!”
4. “Sitting on the beach feeling like you’re on vacation.”
We locals are all truly blessed to live in such a magnificent place where the inside beauty of the people surpasses even the physical beauty of our surroundings.
