You will sail the intricate waterways and enjoy your personal up-close view of Europe’s most treasured destinations that lie on the mighty river as we visit UNESCO sites and see Destination Experiences like the Oberammergau Passion Play. We will explore Vienna for two days and visit the Gottweig Abby and explore Passau and Regensburg before heading to Munich and Oberammergau.
Oberammergau is a small village nestled in the Bavarian Alps about 50 miles from Munich. We will step back in time on this trip and visit two amazing castles, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof where the landscape is as beautiful today as it was in the 1740s.
As we are coming off our own brush with a world pandemic, it isn’t hard to identify with those through history who suffered the horrific fear as the Bubonic Plague rapidly spread through Europe. In the 17th century the pestilence known as the Black Death had infested much of Europe and the quiet little Bavarian village of Oberammergau was no exception.
By 1633 nearly every family in Oberammergau had come to experience death and they feared extinction. The only thing left to do was to pray and they did, asking God for relief. They needed a miracle. So, they promised the Lord that if he would save them from extinction, they would never forget. They vowed they would give thanks every 10 years by performing a play depicting the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, and they have kept their word for over 400 years. This is the famous theatrical masterpiece, The Oberammergau Passion Play, where millions of visitors have come to see live on a stage with only the local villagers allowed to perform. In the beginning, the performance was in the graveyard of those who died from the plague. Eventually, the theater of today was constructed to accommodate more than 5000 visitors.
