Destin Lifers have been discussing the desire for a Destin High School for nearly a decade. This past October, Destin High School was officially established as a Florida not-for-profit corporation. Upon approval of the charter application, the new high school could open as early as August 2020. (Please see complete story in Dec. 2018 Destin Life, www.MyDestinLife.com.)
Destin High School Timeline:
June 2016: Destin City Council votes to approve formation of Destin High School Advisory Committee.
August 2018: Committee selects Collaborative Educational Network (CEN) – consultants charged with writing the charter.
October 2, 2018: Officially established as a Florida not-for-profit Corporation.
Mid-January 2019: Meeting with facility financing and development firms to explore underwriting and viable site locations for high school.
February 2019: CEN will submit charter application.
August 2020: Upon charter approval tentative school opening.
Goals:
Phase 1: $85,000 for consultant fees to write the charter and provide ongoing expertise until the school opens. It will also cover attorney fees for legal documents and the establishment of Destin High School, Inc., as a not-for-profit entity.
Phase 2: $500,000 is for facility development, plans, faculty search, Federal CSP Grant writing, operational and startup expenses.
