We are fortunate to live in a country that will generously, charitably provide for people who cannot provide for themselves. But what of those countries whose governments make no provision? The places where poverty is so rampant and the most innocent among its citizenry suffer hunger, nakedness and sickness without assistance? Places where children are abandoned in the streets because there is no help available to feed them or provide a home for them.
There are many here, who live or work in South Walton County who have taken the call to missions seriously, like Stacey Reed, who regularly puts together Mission Teams to send out to various locations. Rachel Meek and Tiana Brown are two young women, with the hearts of lions and the voices of lambs! Together, they have reached half way around the world to Kenya, Africa, to care for those in desperate situations. Tiana said of her own experience, “I treat the mission field like my own workplace. I do not see these people as different than me or as charity, but rather as friends and family members for me to love, like they were my own.” For Tiana and Rachel, an average day in Kenya meant going out to different villages each day, spending time in that community, getting to know them, feed them, pray with them, play with their children and to show them the love of Christ.
Having served in missions, I completely agree with Tiana. It is feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, caring for the sick but more than that, it is expressing hope to the hopeless and God’s love to the abandoned.
