I Am Woman

by T.J. Hilton

In all the world there is no creature quite like I.
No beauty compares to my features featured in all the World’s eyes.
I am more than a mother, a wife or a lover.
More than your daughter or sister to your brother.

I am Joan of Arc, Mother Mary, Maid Marian and the Virgin Queen.
I am Woman. I am able, have always been able and will always be capable of anything.
I am Eve of Eden. I am Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile. I am Mother Earth.
I am Woman. I am giving. I have always been giving and will always be giving birth.

I was there in Eden. In Babylon. In Egypt. In Greece and in Rome.
I gave birth to Christ, to the Buddha, to Muhammad and to the Pope.
I raised your children while you waged wars. I waged peace and waited for you at home.
I was Queen once on many thrones. A muse and a siren. I am the sea that your souls still sail on.

I am Mother Teresa, Pocahontas, Harriet Tubman and Marilyn Monroe.
I am Woman. I am willing. Willing to do what must be done and even more.
I am Rosa Parks. I am Mary Shelley. I am Helen of Troy and Mighty Aphrodite.
I am Woman. I am strong. My strength knows no bounds though binding it might be.

I gave birth to the children of Israel. I watched the Tower of Babel fall. I watched the Great Wall of China emerge. Led France into battle when I heard the Lord call.

My beauty launched a thousand ships. The Greeks adored my grace. I entertained a hundred Kings. Leonardo da Vinci even painted my face.

A million poems were written in my honor. A million songs proclaim my charms. A million lovers have loved me. I have been embraced and welcomed by many a million arms.

I worked in your factories while you went off to war. I have nursed you, taught you, raised you, loved you and fought beside you. I have been your greatest inspiration and mother to many nations. I have even followed you to outer space and beyond.
I am the melody in your song.

I am Woman.
