Invented in South Walton, The Fisherman’s Post is Making Waves in the World of Surf Fishing

Many a dedicated surf fisher has ventured out into the waves with the aid of a step ladder, chair, or sometimes more creative means to get out to the fish.  To some, the lure of a good catch prove stronger than any hardship.  About three months ago, local inventor, Ron Decker’s wheels started turning and he set out to simplify and elevate surf fishing, literally.  

The Fisherman’s Post, is a portable lightweight aluminum fishing pier/sea life observation post. Weighing under 25 lbs, it is easily toted into the water to a desired water depth and securely augered into the sand.  A casting seat, foot platform, an umbrella and rod holder, cup ring and cooler clip make the Fisherman’s Post functional and comfortable for hours of surffishing or watching marine life.  These piers offer an unparalleled view, securely above the waves.  Ron invites those who haven’t tried them yet to “Catch what they’re missing.”

Never having fished in my life, I took Decker up on his offer one morning and tried one of the piers for myself.  It’s amazing what a few feet of elevation above the waves can do for a person’s vantage point! There’s a lot of marine life that people just don’t see.  Ron explains, “ People who don’t necessarily enjoy fishing may like to go out and watch for stingrays and sea turtles.” (We saw stingrays the morning we went out).  As we set up the piers, people watched us and came over to ask questions.

Ron affirmed that whenever he gets the piers out in the water they always attract curiosity from locals and beachgoers. “People are fascinated”, says Decker, “and someone inevitably asks, ‘Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?’.” With a great love of the outdoors and spending time with friends and family, Ron is enthusiastic about people enjoying the gulf more and even discovering surf fishing when they might not have otherwise. “Can you imagine being able to take your young children with you surf fishing and allowing them to experience marine life in their natural environment?”

Ron sums it up when he says, “This is about getting people out in the water, having fun and spending time together with friends and family.”

The Fisherman’s Post made its debut at the Destin Seafood Festival September 30-Oct 2.  Decker’s entry into the Destin Fishing Rodeo this month with the Fisherman’s Post is sure to lure some attention!
