With summer approaching and hopefully your Spring Cleaning behind you, it’s time to look at ways how we can make our largest investment, our homes, more energy efficient. Back when I was growing up, to conserve energy, my Dad would walk around the house at night turning off all the lights, even if we were in the room and would have to sprint in and out of the front door to keep as much as the “bought” conditioned air inside. 2nd, Bring insulation up to code. 15 years ago, Florida insulation code (which is minimum requirements) was R-19 of attic insulation. R-19 is approximately 7-8” of blown in or batt insulation. Today, code is R-30 (approximately 11-12” of blown in or batt insulation). The minimum requirement for efficiency has nearly doubled. Why, because R-19 just wasn’t enough.
3rd, Stop radiant heat gain and loss. Most of us either have our ductwork or HVAC system or both in our attic which reach temperatures of 140+ degrees in the summer and most often located above our insulation.
