Communication: it’s something we use every day to relate to one another, and sometimes without having to say a word. It is very hard to imagine a life where our individual communication skills or social interactions are less than what they are today. However, for people with autism this inability to communicate easily is a lifelong struggle. According to Autism Spectrum on the Emerald Coast’s website, autism is a developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to properly understand what they see, hear, and otherwise sense. Understanding verbal and nonverbal communication is the most common challenge for people with autism. In addition to causing difficulty with communication, autism causes people to struggle with appropriately relating to people, objects, and events.  The goal of Autism Spectrum on the Emerald Coast is “To enrich the lives of our members through education and social opportunities.”

The Autism Spectrum on the Emerald Coast Inc. hopes to improve the lives of all affected by autism. It is their goal to lessen the challenges that people with autism face. Autism Spectrum is a charitable and educational organization. Its purpose is to be the Emerald Coast’s leader in raising awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ADS). It is their priority to support individuals and families with autism. Autism Spectrum on the Emerald Coast provides outreach opportunities, educational programs, and inclusion activities within schools and the community. Through public awareness, education, advocacy and family support, Autism Spectrum on the Emerald Coast helps those affected by autism to become included, active participants within their communities.

One of the community events that Autism Spectrum puts on is the annual Spring Fam Jam. This year’s Spring Fam Jam was held on March 18, 2017. One of the most popular events of the festival is the Color Run. It is a mile-long course with 4 color stations throughout. Runners get coated in all tints and shade of the color spectrum as they race to the finish line! The festival also includes live bands, food and drink, arts & crafts, face painting, bounce house, obstacle courses and many other fun attractions. Other inclusion programs the Autism Spectrum on the Emerald Coast puts together are Minecraft Socials, a trip to Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park, dolphin cruises, and other festivities.
