Destin Councilmember Kevin Schmidt has proposed turning the vacant lot by the Marler Bridge into an Amphitheatre and area for the community. The idea is, thus far, being well received by area residents. The city agreed to buy the vacant lot in July 2023. The lot has a slight slope making it perfect for an amphitheater-type environment with the stage at the bottom by the water. Schmidt would also like to see the existing magnolia tree and other nature to be incorporated into the design. He feels the natural slope to the area would negate having to bring in bleachers or other seating. The grassy and sandy tiers would encourage picnics and recreation. Schmidt says the stage angle would project sound toward the Emerald Grande and Destin Harbor rather than the nearby residential area.
Councilmember Schmidt proposed that an area toward the top, by the road, could provide space for food trucks, thereby offering dining options. He would also like to see educational areas representing the history of Destin and Choctawhatchee Bay and maritime culture. Docks provided could accommodate vessels and possibly even a ferry service.
John and Allie Stephens, owners of Luther’s in Destin, corroborated with Councilmember Schmidt on the amphitheater idea and design. They are focused on the opportunity for a mooring harbor and oyster farming. Mr. Stephens said, “Right now, in the whole Panhandle, there is no mooring harbor. So, we’re missing out on the Loopers.” He continued, “When I say oyster farming, it’s not to eat, but it’s to actually use the oysters to create more living shores in our area.” Mr. Stephens would like to see a Harbormaster’s office and welcome center placed there at the Amphitheater as well.
Councilman Stephens is interested in hearing public opinions, but did emphasize the use of the area should be for public enjoyment.
