This month in our Destinites Facebook group (www.Facebook.com/groups/Destinites) Mayor Bobby Wagner announced that after 16 years, Destin is moving forward with the “Crosstown Connector,” with construction to begin in early 2024. All parcels needed are owned and design plans are approved. There is a mobility plan to improve other roads and 66 percent of the construction cost is funded. The mayor said, “Now the fun part! What would you like to see at our two new parks?” As always, we appreciate the mayor taking time to participate with our group. There were more than 100 responses to his post and below are just some of the suggestions made by local residents.
1. “Skate park area! Kids need a place to ride skateboards and scooters.”
2. “How about nothing but beautiful trees.”
3. “We don’t need any distractions, just a pretty drive to get you where you’re going.”
4. “Pickleball courts! Outdoor amphitheater? Outdoor gym items for strength training during walks/runs along the pedestrian path.”
5. “No matter what it is, lots and lots of shade trees, shaded parking, covered shaded areas. A walking trail under a covered pergola with solar-powered fans along the way. I would love to see heat-resistant and drought-resistant gardens and flowers (that won’t need constant watering), butterfly friendly, fountains, picturesque spots with shaded benches. Bathrooms. Lots of shade. And more shade.”
6. “Maybe a farmers market area, local vendors, concerts in the park, food trucks, oh, and some much-needed parking areas.”
7. “Outdoor sound/sensory garden!!”
8. “Wouldn’t a sensory park be wonderful?”
9. “ Splash pads and sprinklers please!”
10. “Something like Ferry Park in FWB would be outstanding. But with Destin flair!”
“We will absolutely have a workshop and multiple chances for public input,” Bobby said. If you have a suggestion for the parks, reach out to the mayor or city council and let your voice be heard.
