Check out a book, read to dogs, and build friendships over Legos at the Walton County Coastal Branch Library!
The Walton County Coastal Branch Library invites children to “Read to Dogs” every Wednesday from 3-4pm. Therapy dogs and their handlers settle in the children’s area of the library welcoming children to read to them. The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading. Many of the children who benefit from this program have difficulties reading and as a result have developed self-esteem issues. They are often self-conscious when reading aloud in front of other classmates. By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.
Come join the Lego Club! It’s open to children and families every Wednesday from 3:30–4:30pm. Children can build, explore, and meet up with other Lego builder enthusiasts.
The Walton Coastal Branch Library thanks Gayle Scott, a local mom, for applying and procuring a $500 grant through the Kimberly-Clark foundation to benefit the Lego Club.
Linda Thompson, Coastal Branch Library Manager, says, “We believe Lego Club is much more than just a fun time for children to play. We believe Lego Club offers children the opportunity to expand and explore their creative minds. It assists children in developing spatial and cognitive thinking skills and builds community through social interaction and regular attendance here at the library. Plus, we have the added bonus of new boys and girls visiting the library to check out books!”
