It’s all about making the most out of your visit to Destin and the Emerald Coast according to organizers of the Destin Snowbirds Club. December 15 marked the opening of “The Roost” at the Destin Community Center, home to the Destin Snowbirds December through February. The Club’s humble beginnings in 1973, with a small group of like-minded individuals, planning to have potluck dinners and activities to bring snowbird visitors together.
The organization’s membership has fluctuated since its inception in 1973, at one point reaching over 3,000 members. However, like other snowbird clubs in the region, membership declined following COVID. Given all the wonderful events and activities planned by the Club for this year, Board members are hopeful membership will increase.
The Destin Snowbird Club is open to local residents as well. Residents are great resources for information on restaurants, shopping, museums, church services and many other special events and activities. Snowbirds have developed lasting friendships with local citizens. Having ties to Destin keeps the snowbirds informed on recent developments and programs and, hopefully, helps create a feeling of home away from home for them.
This season, the Club offers a series of programs, events and activities including bus trips, dances, casino trips, golf, craft shows, poker, fishing trips, harbor cruises and more. Every Tuesday, January through February at 10 a.m., the snowbirds meet at the Community Center to hear local entertainment and meet and talk with local vendors who support our Club and provide door prizes. Vendors say, “The opportunity to share information about who we are and what we do helps bring snowbirds to our business year after year.
The Destin Snowbird Club website—thedestinsnowbirds.com–has information about registration, activities and special events. They also have a Destin Snowbird Facebook page allowing members to keep close contact with other members not only while the snowbirds are here, but throughout the year as well. Best of all, snowbirds say that the friendships they have created by joining the Destin Snowbird Club make returning to Destin very special and rewarding.
