Pets in Weddings: A Guide to Including Your Fury Friend in Your Big Day

For decades, I have had the pleasure of meeting several distinguished guests with paws, as pets participating in weddings are not a new tradition. (photo 1) In 2009, this guy was the best man as he was responsible for the couple meeting. Billy ran off in a park in Boston and the groom held him until the bride found him. They were strangers up until that very moment; years later adorned in an orchid collar, he proudly walked down the aisle at Saint Paul’s Church on Duval Street in Key West.

Weddings are a celebration of love, and for many couples that love extends beyond each other to their beloved pets. While dogs are the most common four-legged guest, pets, including cats, are increasingly becoming part of the wedding festivities, not just being present, but as honored participants.

Including your pet in your wedding can add a personal, heartwarming touch that reflects your shared life and values. But, it also requires thoughtful planning to ensure everything goes smoothly.

How Common Is It to Include Pets in Weddings?

Recent surveys reveal just how popular this trend has become:

  • 81% of engaged or recently married pet parents in the U.S. plan to include their pet in their wedding celebration.
  • 38% of pet owners have already included their pet in their wedding or engagement, whether in person or through design elements like invitations.
  • 60% of dog owners know someone who had their dog at their wedding, and 93% believe pets should be involved because they are part of the family.

These numbers show that pets are no longer just spectators; they are becoming stars of the show.

Why Include Pets in Your Wedding?

  • Pets calm people who are nervous: Many people have anxiety about being the center of attention, and/or standing in front of large crowds. Having that familiar unconditional love by your side can help to ease the stress away.
  • Symbol of your bond: Pets often represent the life you have built together. Including them is a nod to your shared journey.
  • Memorable moments: A dog trotting down the aisle or a cat lounging in a flower-adorned basket makes for unforgettable photos—many times becoming a viral sensation.
  • Guest delight: Animals bring joy and charm, often becoming the highlight of the event.

Roles Pets Can Play

Here are a few unique and creative ways to involve your pet:

Role Description
Ring Bearer Pets can carry rings in a pouch or box attached to their collar or harness. Make sure they are secure!
Flower Pet Adorned with floral garlands, pets can walk down the aisle with the flower girl.
Greeter Positioned at the entrance to welcome guests with tail wags and cuddles.
Honorary Guest Simply present at the ceremony or reception, dressed in wedding attire.
Photo Companion Featured in engagement shoots or wedding portraits.

Planning Tips for a Pet-Friendly Wedding

To make your pet’s participation stress-free and safe, consider these tips:

  • Assess your pet’s temperament: Not all pets enjoy crowds or noise. Choose a role that suits their personality.
  • Check venue policies: Confirm that pets are allowed and ask about any restrictions. At The Alice we do have a pet policy; service animals are permitted.
  • Designate a handler: Assign a trusted friend or hire a professional to manage your pet during the event.
  • Practice beforehand: Rehearse your pet’s role to reduce anxiety and ensure they are comfortable.
  • Pack essentials: Bring food, water, toys, waste bags and perhaps their bed or blanket for a cozy spot for rest.
  • Dress smartly: Choose pet attire that is comfortable, breathable and safe; no tight elastics or choking hazards.

Capturing the Moment

Pets add spontaneity and charm to wedding photos. I highly suggest that you have your photographer meet your fur baby in advance. This is not something to spring on them the day of:

  • Schedule pet-friendly photo sessions.
  • Use treats or toys to get their attention.
  • Capture candid moments like snuggles, kisses or playful antics.

Alternatives If Your Pet Cannot Attend

If your pet is not suited for the big day or the venue does not allow animals, you can still honor them:

  • Include them in invitations or signage: Use illustrations or photos.
  • Add a pet-themed cake topper: Miniature versions of your furry friend.
  • Create a tribute table: Display their photos with a sweet message.
  • Incorporate them into vows: Mention your shared love for your pet.
  • Have a to-go doggie bar: people love to bring treats home to their pet.

Final Thoughts

Including pets in weddings is a beautiful way to celebrate the full scope of your love story. With thoughtful planning and a touch of creativity, your furry friend can be part of your most cherished memories. Whether they are walking down the aisle or simply wagging their tail from the sidelines, pets bring a unique kind of joy that makes your wedding truly unforgettable.
