Below is a question raised by one of our members and some of the responses they received. Group Member Question: So now there’s going to be a code that if you leave your trash can by the road before or after trash day the city will have the right to look up if you homestead your home and if you haven’t you will receive a code (potentially monetary) violation? Am I understanding this correctly? Fines anywhere from $300-$500 dollars for trash cans?

Some Member Responses:
1. I know I’m going to get hate for this, but I see so many trash cans being left out and blocking the bike paths, sidewalks, even in the road, which is a hazard for bikers, pedestrians and drivers. So, maybe the threat to be charged will help people be mindful of pulling their trash cans in.
2. Love how the first line (of the ordinance) is about getting your neighbors to call and complain about your fellow neighbors. If you have someone that does not like you, oh, the harm they could cause.
3. I think they are trying to improve the standard and make the city more appealing. I don’t know what the timeframe is for the cans, but I do think it should be reasonable. One day before and one day after, because sometimes we forget or may be out of town. That’s my opinion anyway. Also, I’m pretty sure they discussed a warning first. So, it seems to be more geared towards those that are habitual in leaving cans out.
4. So, all of Destin is a HOA now. Great. I mean sometimes you forget. Busy with kids and work and moving a can is the last thing on your mind. City needs to chill on some of these things.
5. I know the tickets go to the owners. But then who gets in trouble or is going to have to pay those tickets eventually when landlords start including that verbiage into their lease agreements? But, that’s all beside the point. I’m not stressing huge on the looking up people part, but the fact that they’re trying to put more rules and restrictions on Destin residents.
6. I don’t see what’s wrong with keeping Destin looking nice and trash cans off the street. I don’t think it’s much to ask to move your trash can.
7. Just bring your trash can in!
