In our Destinites Facebook group for locals this past month (www.Facebook.com/groups/Destinites), a new resident addressed the issue of manhole covers around town. An excerpt from his post: “The placement of manhole covers are precisely located and positioned where you have to drive over them (many, many times), destroying your shocks, struts and suspension over time.” According to the 100 comments, it is also of great concern to many citizens of Destin. Below are some of their replies.

Members Comments:
1. That’s why we drive 4×4’s.
2. Sewer lines installed prior to lane expansion within the city. I don’t like either, however, very expensive retrofit.
3. Totally get it. Cost would be astronomical to relocate them, just very annoying. Guess I’ll have to become a professional “swerver” hoping not to get pulled over.
4. I’ve got self-driving on my car and I can’t use it, because it doesn’t understand avoiding the manhole covers. (ha)
5. The City’s Department of Public Works provides maintenance on all publicly-owned streets, storm sewer infrastructure, grounds, facilities and public equipment.
6. This is definitely one of those issues where we have multiple agencies and “jurisdiction” to work through—yay government. We did pass a financial ordinance to repave every road in Destin in the coming years. I will speak with our team about ways to incorporate solutions to reduce the bump into this already-funded program.
7. Yessssss. From like Big Kahuna’s all the way down to just before McDonald’s. Could be further down. That right lane driving west! Omg. this needed to be said.
8. Everywhere I have lived before, when they add a layer of asphalt, they add a spacer of equal thickness underneath the manhole cover, to bring it up to level. Not sure why they didn’t do that here, but driving down that right lane through there is a freaking joke.
9. Lack of quality control of the planners, vendors and inspectors! I think we need to spend some money on more experienced planners and bypass the prettifying of the median areas on 98! It seems like they have been done and redone several times!
10. Wow we must really be running out of things to complain about. Manholes are for utilities and they are usually put in city property (roads). Would you prefer it in your yard or not have plumbing, gas or possibly electric? We are blessed to have what we have here. Most cities are full of potholes and other vehicle-damaging issues. Roads around here are fantastic.
