It’s time for more “Reel” Talk from the Mayor and me. This time, the City of Destin’s Mayor, Bobby Wagner, and I sat down and reflected on 2023.
TY: Christmas in Destin has such a lovely small-town feel in a variety of ways. For instance, the Harbor waters light up with a splash of all colors with the boat parade – magical! What’s your most meaningful memory of that particular parade?
BW: Years ago, I was asked to be the official photographer of the Destin Boat Parade by Kathy Blue Marler. As a newer business owner, being able to volunteer and contribute to such a special event was a proud moment for me. The parade was breathtaking and capturing those holiday moments as the vessels “showed off” their lights and spirit in front of the judges was a lot of fun!
TY: The other parade, the one on Highway 98, was equally amazing with thousands of people lining the streets. Our Parks and Rec folks took care of things beginning to end. And we, City staff, had a blast building our own float this year and dressing up as Cousin Eddie from “A Christmas Vacation.” What were some floats you liked?
BW: The WOW factor for me was the bubble cannon float! While we didn’t have snow on the ground, the bubbles were a great substitute. My honorable mention, since I love music, goes to a local band called the “Purple Monkeys.” They won the “Best Band” award in the parade this year and were fantastic to hear.
TY: Live music is the best, and Purple Monkeys was a crowd hit! It was also nice to see everyone come together for the music and Christmas tree lighting at the Community Center. What’s one of your favorite Christmas traditions in Destin?
BW: I have always had a love for Christmas lights and have continued my family’s tradition of going all out on decorations during the holiday season. One of my favorite parts of this time of year is when my family and I pile into a car to drive around and see everyone’s Christmas lights. I am hopeful that we will see even more spectacular light displays in the future.
TY: You received a spectacular Christmas gift this year with Bekah saying “yes” to your marriage proposal! Anything else you’re asking Santa for?
BW: I am ecstatic that Bekah agreed to marry me and that we get to spend this holiday season engaged. This Christmas has been one of the most memorable for both of us. Bekah is my best friend, and I am grateful that we get to learn, grow and share this life together. I have everything I could ask for and don’t need anything from Santa this year.
TY: Perfect answer. So, we’ve reflected well on 2023, but looking ahead, what are some “resolutions” – goals – for Destin in 2024?
BW: It will be a pivotal year for our community, and we’re presented with a remarkable opportunity to shape the future of our city at the ballot box. As we approach this crucial presidential election year, it’s the ideal time to engage our citizens in a democratic process that could fundamentally transform the Destin community. Key issues such as enhancing local representation, considering strategic annexations, and expanding the scope of our public safety services are not just policy decisions. They are vital steps toward a legacy that will benefit generations to come. By placing these critical topics on the ballot, we empower our community to make informed decisions and contribute to the collective vision of our city’s future.
