In this Reel Time, the Mayor and I sat down to talk about how to help everyone enjoy Destin.
TY: It was terrific to see so many people enjoying the refreshed Morgan Sport’s Center Playground at the re-opening on May 24th. One of my favorite pieces to the playground is the addition of some wheelchair-accessible and inclusive playground equipment. It was heartwarming to hear from several parents who were over-the-moon excited for their kids who struggle to find equipment to meet their needs.
BW:
I couldn’t agree more. Accessibility is not a checkbox—it’s a commitment. And in Destin, we’re committed to making sure that everyone, regardless of ability, gets to experience the joy of our parks and the sense of belonging that makes this city so special.
TY: The musical pieces and the merry-go-round, in particular, have been big hits. We’re hoping to see more of this type of equipment in the future in Destin. It’s only right that kids have access to enjoy our beautiful parks. All kids deserve a place to be playful!
BW:
As a former music major in college, I was drawn to the music equipment and was thrilled to see the kids so engaged with all the unique gear. It’s proof that when we design with inclusivity in mind, everyone benefits. I’d love to see this kind of thoughtful equipment become the standard in all future playground projects!
TY: Yes! And not just our parks, but our beaches, too. I recently posted on the City’s official Facebook page about the beach wheelchairs. Right now, there are two beach chairs that individuals can borrow from Destin Fire Control District, but they’ve ordered a third which should be in soon. It’s no cost to use. So, we hope people take advantage of the program. The “beach wheels” as they are often called are available right now to be used at James Lee Park and Shirah Street public beach access. The third will be here soon at June White Decker. The number to call about the beach wheels is 850-837-8413.
BW:
Absolutely—it’s not just about the playground or the beach; it’s about creating a Destin where everyone feels invited. I’m so glad you highlighted the beach wheelchair program. It’s a perfect example of how a relatively simple initiative can unlock an entirely new experience for someone. Whether it’s a child spinning on the merry-go-round or a grandparent finally able to dip their toes in the Gulf, these moments matter.
