By JoDell Haverfield, Have Travel Memories
I have finally returned to cruising! By the time you read this editorial, I will have visited 12 ports in a months’ time while sailing through the Western, Southern and Eastern Caribbean on three cruise lines.
For our last cruise, my husband and I decided to take his age 94 years mother on her first cruise. My mother-in-law is very sharp and spry for her age. She was so afraid of missing anything and was absolutely horrified if we suggested she might need to take a nap. The truth is she had perhaps more stamina than we did. Her main problem was hitching up her tiny new capris over her size 4 frame as she led the way.
She consistently declined shuttle rides down the pier into port no matter how long the walk was. She was never the slightest bit motion sick and enjoyed exploring the ship, new foods and each port. By the sixth day, she did agree to the trolly ride back to the ship.
As I quietly observed my husband’s mother throughout the cruise, I often found myself pondering as to whether I have 20 more years to cruise! At least I can say I have seized as many opportunities as possible to travel and cruise, especially with my family.
My in-laws consistently refused our invitations through the years to join us on a cruise. I wondered now that my father in-law has recently passed away, was he kicking himself as he watched us from above.
It felt so amazing to be on the water again, meeting new people and renewing relationships with others. I never forgot how much I loved the sea. I kept walking out on our balcony just to make sure I’m not dreaming and to savor each moment. My memory has served me well although, I must admit, in the last two years I wondered if travel would return to normal.
The truth is, it’s still not “normal.” Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines are not requiring masks onboard except when inside the terminal and during boarding and disembarking. The ship’s crew is required to always wear masks. It is rumored, however, that soon they, too, will be able to discard their masks. Carnival Cruise Line is still in mask mode for guests and crew.
The ships I have recently boarded sailed out of port at slightly over 50% capacity as is the case with most cruise lines at present. However, they are all steadily increasing capacity as well as their rates. For this reason, I recommend booking your next cruise as soon as possible. Lock in your rate now. The travel mandates are ever changing. So, I recommend calling a travel agent to handle all your needs and keep you informed. Remember there is no charge to use a travel agent.
Before I sign off this month’s editorial, I must testify of my joy at this special time of year as we celebrate Easter. I am reminded of Christ and his resurrection. I know he lives today. I know he loves us and watches over us. I am humbled at the thought that he suffered, died and was resurrected for me. I wish all of you a very Happy Easter.
Thanks for Travelin’ with JoDell!
